Chapter 14. Collecting and Paying Sales Tax > Creating a Sales Tax Item

Creating a Sales Tax Item

A sales tax item is created for each type of sales tax that you pay. Depending on where you do business, you might pay sales tax to many different states—or one state might require different sales tax rates for different types of taxable items. Each rate and each government require a separate sales tax item.

Tip from

Some companies have to charge different rates of sales tax for the various types of items they sell. Food sold in a food store might be taxed at one rate, for example, but food prepared and sold for consumption in a restaurant might be taxed at a different rate. If you own a restaurant that is combined with a specialty food store, you might be required to charge sales tax at two different rates. Each rate is set up as a separate item in QuickBooks.
