Understanding How Resource Overallocations Occur

A resource is overallocated when it is assigned to work more hours during a given time period than it has available for work on the project. The number of hours the resource has available for the project during any given time period is determined by two values that you define:

  • The units of the resource that are available during the time period— You can define time periods and units by double-clicking on a resource name in either the Assign Resources dialog box or the Resource Sheet table to display the Resource Information dialog. You can then change both the units and availability (over time) of the resources in the Resource Availability table on the General tab of the Resource Information dialog box. Units refers to the number of resources available to work (for example, you might have 10 programmers, but you would only ever have 1 unit of Scott Adams).

  • The number of working hours the resource has for the time period in the resource calendar— You define working time on the Working Time tab of the Resource Information dialog box.
