Getting Familiar with Merge Terminology

Everyone calls it a mail merge, but you can really pull together any type of information to produce any type of document. So, although you hear more about using the Merge feature to produce personalized letters, envelopes, and labels, it’s also a very powerful tool for organizing key pieces of information.

As the term suggests, a merge is a combination of information from two different sources. Typically, you have a form file, which is the document, and one data file, which contains the information you want to insert. The form file is just a regular document with merge codes in it. The merge codes act as markers for the information from the data file.
