Lesson 12. Using Visio 2002 to Create Web Pages > Understanding Graphic Formats

Understanding Graphic Formats

Saving Visio shapes or full-page diagrams as images is a simple process, but it does have some steps you may be unaware of. Each of the three Web formats has different characteristics that are suitable in different situations.

Saving to a GIF Image Format

Graphics Interchange Format or .gif (pronounced JIF, like the peanut butter brand) is the default graphics file format when Visio saves for Web pages. This is due to the type of imagery mostly used in Visio, line-styled or vector-based, and has a limited quantity of colors. .gif is a widely recognized and used format due to its compression algorithm. Its compression method functions by recognizing patterns in adjacent pixels that have the same color or color combinations. The .gif format is a product of CompuServe, and has a color limitation of 256.
