Chapter 1. What's New in Word 2002 > Language and International Improvements

Language and International Improvements

More than ever, Word is designed to operate in multilingual environments. You can now

  • Translate individual words on-the-fly, using Word's new Translate task pane (see Figure 1.7).

Figure 1.7. Translating a word from English to French.

  • Change default language settings for Word and Office features without changing the language that appears in the user interface and Help system (so you can, for example, create all your documents in French without using French menus and dialog boxes).

  • Use international Unicode characters more broadly. For example, Unicode characters are used when you copy text from an HTML or plain text document.

  • Format and print vertical envelopes, which are often called for in Japan and China.
