Troubleshooting

Speech Recognition Isn't Working on My Computer

In addition to the base system requirements discussed earlier (128MB RAM, 400MHz processor), Word has specific requirements for the versions of Windows that must be present in order for speech recognition to work.

  • If you're running the original version of Windows 98 (not Windows 98 Second Edition), you must download and install Microsoft Active Accessibility Redistribution Kit (RDK) in order to use voice commands in U.S. English dialog boxes. The RDK is currently available at http://www.microsoft.com/enable/msaa/download.htm.

  • If you use Windows NT 4.0, you must install Internet Explorer 5.5.

  • If you use Windows 2000, and use Microsoft Outlook/Outlook Express HTML Mail (for example, email formatted as Web pages instead of as text only), you must install Internet Explorer 5.5 with Service Pack 1.
