Part VIII: Appendixes > What Is the Registry?

What Is the Registry?

The registry is a database that exists in files on your hard disk. Each computer that runs Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT, or Windows 2000 has a registry. The registry contains information about your computer hardware, the operating system, applications (such as Outlook) that run under Windows, and computer users.

Although the information in the registry is in several files (many files in the case of Windows NT and Windows 2000), you don't have to be concerned with how these files are structured. That's because Windows contains various tools for displaying and modifying what's in the registry.
