Part VIII: Appendixes > System Requirements

System Requirements

To experience acceptable performance from Office XP, Microsoft recommends:

  • An x86-compatible PC with a Pentium (or better) processor clocked at 166MHz or higher. Microsoft recommends at least a P5 90MHz processor.

  • At least 32MB of RAM if you're running Outlook under Windows 98 or Windows Me and at least 64MB of RAM if you're running Outlook under Windows NT or Windows 2000. You might need more RAM if you want to use more than one Office application simultaneously.

  • At least 350MB of free space on your hard drive. An extra 50MB of space is required for each additional language user interface.

  • A CD-ROM drive (Office XP is not available on floppy disks) for local installation, or a network connection to a server for LAN-based installation.

  • A video board and VGA color monitor capable of displaying at least 256 colors (Super VGA or better is recommended) at 800×600 pixel resolution.

  • A Microsoft Mouse (or compatible) pointing device.

  • A modem capable of communicating at 9600bps or more (at least 28.8Kbps is recommended) if you intend to use Outlook to send and receive messages by way of a phone line.

  • Microsoft Windows 98, Windows NT 4 (with at least Service Pack 6a installed), Windows 2000, or Me. Office XP is not compatible with Windows 3.x, Windows NT 3.5x, or Windows 95.
