Chapter 1. How Outlook Works > How Outlook Saves Data Items

How Outlook Saves Data Items

Data items are the units of information Outlook saves. All the information about a single contact is a data item, as is a message you send or receive. As an Outlook user, you need to have a basic understanding of how Outlook saves data items. If your job is to support Outlook users and, perhaps, to develop applications based on Outlook, you need to have a detailed understanding of this subject.

Note

If you've used previous versions of Outlook, one of the first things you'll notice about Outlook 2002 is that service options are gone. Outlook now has an integrated environment; no longer do you have to choose among the No E-mail, Internet Mail Only, or Corporate/Workgroup service options.
