Storing Information

Exchange saves information in what's known as information stores, of which there are three: Public, Private, and Directory. Prior to Exchange version 5.5, each of these stores had a maximum capacity of 16GB. Although this is more than sufficient for small organizations, it is not adequate for large enterprises. In versions 5.5 and 2000, the maximum capacity of each store has been increased to 16,000GB.

Each user keeps e-mail and other personal information in the Private store, and an Exchange administrator can limit the amount of space available to each user. Shared information is kept in the Public store.
