What Is Exchange?

Before going any further, I should point out that Microsoft has used the name Exchange for two completely different products. Windows 95 contained an application known as Exchange that was a mail client intended for use with Microsoft Mail, Internet e-mail, and a few other e-mail systems. It was, in fact, the precursor of Outlook, which became available in Office 97. This Exchange is now known as Windows Messaging.

The other Exchange, the one that's the subject of this chapter, is a mail server that first became available in 1996.
