What Is a Rule?

A rule is a set of conditions, actions, and exceptions that controls how Outlook processes and organizes messages and other Outlook items. The conditions determine to which types of items a rule applies; the actions are what the rule does; and the exceptions determine when a rule does not apply to certain items. Some rules work on messages you receive; other rules work on messages you send.
