Chapter 6. Accessing the Internet > Communicating Instantly

Communicating Instantly

Instant communication, otherwise known as instant messaging or chatting, has recently become widely used and is now available from within Outlook. You can establish a connection with one or more other people by way of the Internet. What you type on your computer is almost instantly displayed to those other people; likewise, what those people type is displayed to you. You can use this to have a private conversation with a friend or a discussion with a group.

Enabling Instant Messaging

To enable instant messaging from within Outlook, with any Outlook Information viewer displayed, select Tools, Options, and select the Other tab. In that tab, check Enable Instant Messaging in Microsoft Outlook. You must have a Hotmail or Passport account before you can use instant messaging.
