Chapter 28. PowerPoint Essentials > File Compatibility Issues

File Compatibility Issues

Microsoft changed the format of PowerPoint presentation files between PowerPoint 95 and PowerPoint 97. PowerPoint 2000 and PowerPoint 97 use the same file format. Using PowerPoint 2002, you can open and edit files created in any version of PowerPoint; however, files created in PowerPoint 2000 or PowerPoint 97 cannot be opened in PowerPoint 95.

If you need to share files with users of PowerPoint 95, you must save them in an alternate format. To do so, choose File, Save As and select PowerPoint 97-2002 & 95 Presentation (*.ppt) in the Save as Type box. When you choose this option, PowerPoint saves two copies of your presentation in the same file—one in PowerPoint 95 format, the other in PowerPoint 2000 format—and anyone can open, view, and edit the presentation by using PowerPoint 95, 97, 2000, or 2002.
