Chapter 16. Advanced Document Formatting > Creating and Editing Headers and Foo...

Creating and Editing Headers and Footers

Headers appear at the top of each page; footers at the bottom. Word lets you specify "first page only" headers and footers, so the first page of a report or letter can have headers and footers that are different from those in the body of the report. In addition, Word enables you to set up different headers and footers for odd-numbered and even-numbered pages. That comes in handy if you're going to be printing on the front and back of each sheet of paper. (Look at the headers in this book for an example.)

Creating Headers and Footers

Headers and footers exist on every page in a Word document. Until you put something in them, however, they're invisible. Word reserves room for them, but doesn't print anything (or show anything on the screen) in the reserved area.
