Troubleshooting

How to Install MSDE

Q1:When I choose File, New and click the Project (New Database) icon, Access asks me to fill in details about my SQL Server connection, but I can't connect successfully.
A1: You need to install the Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine. Find the Office XP CD1 and run the Setup program in the MSDE2000 folder. This option is not installed by default, and it will not install automatically like other Office features. If you're creating a new project from scratch, choose File, Connection; in the Data Link Properties dialog box, enter your computer name as the name of the SQL server, but don't include any backslashes in front of it. You must have administrative rights, or be an authorized user as defined by the SQL Server manager. After completing these steps, you should be able to connect your Access project to the Microsoft Data Engine.

Installing the Sample Databases

Q1:I want to look through the Access sample databases to see whether I can glean any ideas or borrow any objects or code, but the Open dialog box doesn't include shortcuts for the samples, and I can't find them anywhere on my hard disk.
A1: Before you can open the sample files, you have to install them. If you click a shortcut, the Windows Installer handles this chore automatically, but as you've discovered, the shortcuts to the sample files are available only when you first begin using Access. After you've worked with a few files, those shortcuts drop off the bottom of the list. To make the files available, run the Office Setup program (from Control Panel, choose Add/Remove Programs, choose your Office version, click Change, and choose the Add or Remove Features option). Drill down through the Microsoft Access options until you find the Sample Databases group, and configure the sample applications by using the Run from My Computer option. By default, the Northwind files are installed in the Program Files\ Microsoft Office\ Office 10\ Samples folder.
