Selecting Cells

After data entry, selecting worksheet content is probably the task most frequently performed in Excel. Selecting cells and ranges tells Excel where you are and what parts of a sheet you intend to change, and is an integral step in most formatting, calculation, and editing procedures. To select an individual cell, click it or use any of the keyboard shortcuts shown in Table 2.1 for worksheet navigation to move to the desired cell.

Table 2.1. Keyboard Shortcuts for Selecting Individual Cells
Keyboard Shortcut Selects
Enter The cell below the current cell.
Tab The cell to the right of the current cell.
Shift+Tab The cell to the left of the current cell.
Ctrl+Home Cell A1.
Home The first cell in the current row.
Ctrl+Arrow Goes to the last formatted cell in a row or column. If no formatting, goes to the last row or column of the spreadsheet.
Shift+Arrow Selects the entire range between the starting cell and the new destination cell.
Ctrl+Shift+Arrow Selects the entire range between the starting cell and the last formatted cell. If no additional cell formatting or content is entered, it selects the end of the spreadsheet row or column.
Ctrl+* Collapses the column of the current selection.
