Chapter 23. Professional Charting Techni... > Formatting Charts for a Professional...

Formatting Charts for a Professional Look

What are “professional” chart techniques? And who dictates what “professional” is? Professional techniques separate those who achieve and create impact from those who don't. To be able to say a thousand words with a single chart or a series of charts can be extremely important. There's a certain standard in the corporate world, as you might have noticed, but no one ever says what that standard is. In this chapter, you'll learn some of those basic “professional” elements that can help you achieve greater impact with your charts. In addition, you'll learn some new ways to combine charts with their source worksheets.

This chapter reviews several distinctly different chart types. Learning ways to mix and match information will help you become more creative in using the charting capabilities in Excel. You'll learn techniques such as erasing borders and backgrounds, which is one of the key elements in being able to combine and manipulate information on worksheets with charts. Another way to combine tools in Excel is to use form controls. Form controls are best used with charts when you have to continually extract to-date information, such as cost-to-date or production-to-date. This technique is also described.
