Creating Custom Formats

If Excel's built-in formats don't match what you're looking for, you can create a custom format. For example, you might want a date to show the weekday, month, date, and year, such as “Saturday, January 16, 1999.” Or, you might want to make sure that if a number is less than 1, Excel omits the zero to the left of the decimal point. In both cases, you create a custom format.

To create a custom format, you type a string of formatting codes(also simply called codes) that Excel interprets. Here are the details:
