Chapter 7. Sharing Information Among Off... > What Is Object Linking and Embedding...

What Is Object Linking and Embedding (OLE)?

OLE (pronounced "oh-LAY") stands for object linking and embedding. It is a Windows feature that enables the Windows applications that employ it to share information directly, without any conversion of the data.

For example, you might create a quarterly report in Microsoft Word that contains an Excel chart. The Excel data in the chart changes each quarter. When it comes time to generate the next quarterly report, you could find the most up-to-date version of the Excel chart and copy and paste it into the report, or you could relax while your OLE link updates the report automatically with the changes made in each supporting document.
