Chapter 21. Creating Web Pages in Word > What Is the World Wide Web?

What Is the World Wide Web?

The Internet is a global network of interconnected computer systems that provides several ways for users to communicate with each other, such as electronic mail (e-mail), Internet Relay Chat, and more important, the World Wide Web (WWW). The Web is the newest onramp to the Internet, and it enables you to move quickly from computer to computer (no matter the distance between the computers) by hopping from Web page to Web page using a Web browser (such as Microsoft Internet Explorer).

The sites that you view on the Web are made up of linked documents created in the HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) programming language. Your Web browser is able to translate HTML into a format that is viewable (and usable) on your home or office computer.
