Understanding the Driver Resource Concept

The driver resource refers to the fact that, in some cases, one or more resources are fully occupied with work throughout a task's duration (the driver resources), and other resources have less work to do during the same period (the nondriver resources).

For example, if you create a task with the default duration of 1 day and then assign Mary, Scott, and Pat to the task with the work amounts given in Table 9.4, Project calculates the task duration to accommodate the longest time needed by any one of the resources. In this case, both Mary and Pat need 5 days to complete their assignments, so the task duration is changed by Project to 5 days. Scott only works the first 2 days on the task.
