Chapter 12. Reviewing the Project Plan > Using the Custom Outline Codes

Using the Custom Outline Codes

When you need to apply a code to a task or resource, such as an internal accounting code or a pre-designated organizational code, use the Outline Code fields instead of Project's WBS field. There are ten Outline Code fields (named Outline Code 1, Outline Code 2, and so on) available in Project 2000. These new fields enable you to apply your own codes to tasks or resources. The advantage is you can then sort the task or resource list by this code and print the results. For instance, you can create a code that designates the department responsible for the task and the type of work that the task entails (say for billing purposes). After you've applied a code to each task, you can sort the list by department and type of work, thus providing each department head with a clear picture of the tasks assigned to the department and the type of work involved.

The Outline Code fields provide a drop-down list from which users can look up authorized codes. By limiting users to the codes on the list, you prevent inadvertent errors that arise when codes are manually typed in.
