Part 9: Appendixes > Project Stakeholders

Project Stakeholders

The project stakeholders, according to the PMBOK Guide, are the key "individuals and organizations who are actively involved in the project, or whose interests may be positively or negatively affected as a result of project execution or successful project completion" (see the PMBOK Guide, p. 15). The key stakeholders in every project include

  • The customer is the individual or organization who will use the product of the project or benefits directly from the project deliverable or deliverables.

  • The performing organization is the enterprise whose employees are most directly involved in performing the work of the project.

  • The sponsor is the individual or group within the performing organization who provides the financial resources, in case or in kind, for the project. Another name for the sponsor is the financier. Not to be confused with the customer, the sponsor finances the project from the beginning until paid back by the customer at the end of the project or during the project life cycle.

  • The project manager is the individual responsible for managing the project.
