Part 9: Appendixes > Working with Multiple Projects

Working with Multiple Projects

Certain types of endeavors are closely related to projects. A program is often defined as a series of projects that are managed in a coordinated way to realize benefits not available from managing the projects separately. Many programs include elements of on-going operations, such as the NASA space program. Additionally, programs often involve a series of repeated undertakings, such as a fundraising program, to maintain a nonprofit organization, or membership drives, continually performed by many organizations.

In some corporations, program and project management are treated as synonyms. In others, programs are considered subsets of projects. Within others, smaller, more manageable subprojects are sometimes rolled up into larger, comprehensive master projects. Contracted companies that are external to the performing organization often work subprojects.
