The Science of Project Management: The Nine Knowledge Areas

The knowledge areas of project management describe important considerations for project success. These processes have been organized into nine distinct knowledge areas: Managing Integration, Managing Scope, Managing Time, Managing Costs, Managing Quality, Managing Human Resources, Managing Communication, Managing Risk, and Managing Procurement. A summary of each knowledge area is provided for your benefit.

Managing Integration

Project Integration Management (see the PMBOK Guide, Chapter 4) includes the processes required to ensure that the various elements of the project are properly coordinated. It involves making tradeoffs among competing objectives and alternatives to meet or exceed stakeholder needs and expectations. Although all project management processes are integrative, to some extent, the processes described in the Integration Management section of the PMBOK Guide are primarily integrative.
