Part 9: Appendixes > Understanding Project Management

Understanding Project Management

Regardless of your experience with Microsoft Project, a review of the basics of project management will assist you with planning and executing a successful project plan. Although this is not meant to be a replacement for experience or schooling within the discipline, this short appendix will introduce you to the basics of what you must consider when building a plan. Look to it as a review, or even a primer, of many of the factors you should consider prior to embarking upon a project.

Further detail beyond that which is explained here can be found in A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide). The PMBOK Guide is a publication developed and maintained by the Project Management Institute (PMI). Recognized as the authoritative Guide to project management, the PMBOK guide was deemed the ANSI standard for project management in November 1999. The Guide is available for purchase or you can download it for free directly from PMI's Web site, http://www.pmi.org. Once there, you can navigate to the publications page and download a copy, or you can go directly to the document at http://www.pmi.org/publictn/pmboktoc.htm.
