Chapter 5. Creating a Task List > Entering Milestones

Entering Milestones

The milestoneis a special type of task that represents a significant landmark, decision point, or turning point in the life of the project. You commonly use milestones to mark the completion of major phases or other major events in the project. A milestone is most easily defined by entering a task name and assigning it a duration of zero. Milestones typically do not represent doing work; they signal that some work has started or is completed. Mile-stones represent a point in time when something happens, whereas the ordinary tasks stretch out over time and represent continuing activity.

Tip

By definition, a milestone is a task that has a duration, cost, and resource assignment of zero, regardless of what the software allows you to do.

In the default Gantt Chart, milestones are formatted with the scheduled completion date displayed next to it. Also, milestones are often used to close the loop on a network schedule, providing both a starting point and ending point for the diagram.

At a minimum, it is good practice to ensure all of your projects have two milestones: project start and project complete.
