An Overview of Assigning Resources

You usually assign resources to tasks because you want Microsoft Project to help you schedule and monitor the work the resource does on the task. You can also use resource assignments to associate a cost with the task, such as the contract fee of a vendor who will deliver the completed task without requiring you to schedule and monitor the work. Finally, you can use a resource assignment to associate a name with the task just for reporting purposes. This chapter shows you how to use Microsoft Project's views and tools to assign resources and to modify resource assignments. To benefit the most from this chapter, you should understand the contents of Chapter 8, "Defining Resources and Costs," and Chapter 9, "Understanding Resource Scheduling." There are intricate relationships among task and resource fields that are covered in those chapters.

When assigning resources to tasks, there are a number of data fields you can use to give Microsoft Project the information it needs to calculate schedules and costs as you intend:
