Chapter 2. Understanding Outlook's Servi... > Internet Mail Only Service Option

Internet Mail Only Service Option

If you intend to use Outlook to send and receive Internet or intranet e-mail, but not e-mail using any other type of mail server, install Outlook's Internet Mail Only (IMO) service option. After you do so, you'll have all the capabilities of the No E-mail service option (described previously in this chapter), and the ability to send and receive e-mail by way of Internet service providers (ISPs) and also by way of your organization's intranets that use Internet protocols. This service option doesn't support servers that use the Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) (page 39) standard.

Note

The last sentence of the preceding paragraph is generally true, but there is an exception. You can use Outlook's IMO service option to access e-mail on an Exchange server if that server has the IMAP service installed. In that case, you can create an IMAP account in IMO Outlook to access e-mail in an Exchange account.
