How Outlook Handles Internet E-mail

The material covered in this chapter applies specifically to C/W Outlook (page 54). If you're using IMO Outlook, refer to Chapter 3, "Sending and Receiving E-mail with Internet Mail Only Outlook," for information about sending and receiving Internet e-mail.

If you have an Internet e-mail account with an Internet service provider (ISP), you can use Outlook to exchange e-mail messages with anyone who also has an Internet e-mail account. You can also use Outlook to exchange e-mail messages by way of an intranet that uses Internet protocols. Outlook sends messages to your mail server, which routes those messages to recipients' mail servers. Messages addressed to you are delivered to your mail server, from which you can retrieve them.
