Fields That Might Already Be in Your Document

You've come across several field codes already, although you may not have realized it. When you place the date, time, or page number in a header or footer, and instruct Word to updated it automatically, Word places a { DATE }, { TIME }, or { PAGE } field code rather than text in the document. Whenever you update your fields, Word then checks your computer's built-in clock and updates the date and time to reflect what it finds there.

You can insert many fields quite easily if you use the specific Word menu commands, toolbar buttons, or dialog boxes, rather than inserting them directly as field codes. Table 27.1 lists these commands, buttons, and dialog boxes, and the field codes that correspond to them.
