Chapter 48. FrontPage Essentials > Understanding HTTP

Understanding HTTP

Advanced Office users working on the Web have come to understand HTML, the tag-based language that defines how a Web page looks and what it does. Few, however, have a good understanding of HTTP, the mechanism that makes page retrieval and linking possible. Taking the time to learn the basics of HTTP now will enrich your FrontPage experience.

HTTP stands for the Hypertext Transport Protocol—it is the language of the World Wide Web. Most Web documents are retrieved by using HTTP, and understanding how HTTP works can give you insight into problems that may arise as you develop your Web site.
