Secrets of the Office Masters: Creating an Online Form

An online form is simply a worksheet that contains cells in which you expect users to enter data. A form can be as simple as two cells that contain a name and phone number, or it can go on for several screens with dozens of data-entry options. You can design a form any way you like, but in general we suggest that you follow some common-sense guidelines to make it easy for users (including yourself) to enter data:

  • If possible, fit the entire data area on one screen.

  • Use formatting (backgrounds, borders, and merged cells) and text labels as visual cues to identify cells that contain data.

  • Add macros and custom Help screens if you want to automate the form. For example, you might want to create a Save and Post macro and assign it to a button on the form so that users don't have to worry about how and where to save the worksheet when they've finished entering data.
