Secrets of the Office Masters: Elements of Effective Page Layout Design

FrontPage makes it easy to develop Web pages, but there is yet another dimension to creating great-looking Web pages, and that is page layout design. How do you combine the elements of HTML to produce a page layout that works for your information and audience, and remains consistent across your entire Web site? Use the following guidelines to help you in your endeavor to create great-looking Web pages.

Your first and foremost task for a great-looking Web page is to establish an overall organization of the information contained within it. Web technologies offer infinite possibilities here, but the reality of how users use the Web can affect your design choices. Users do not like to scroll the browser window, so you must strive to deliver your message near the top of the page, along with other important page elements, such as the navigational links to other areas of the Web site, and a page banner to help the user understand where they are in your site.
