Chapter 2. Customizing the Office Interface > Setting IntelliMouse Options

Setting IntelliMouse Options

If your mouse includes a thumbwheel between the buttons, such as the Microsoft IntelliMouse or Logitech Wheel Mouse, you can use the wheel for a wide variety of tasks:

  • Rotate the wheel forward and back to scroll through Word documents, Excel worksheets, and Access forms, reports, and datasheets. In PowerPoint's Normal view, rotating the wheel jumps from one slide to the next, although in Outlook you can scroll through a list of mail messages, Calendar entries, or items in the Contacts folder.

  • In Word, Excel, Outlook, and Access, hold down the wheel button to pan up or down. Drag the pointer above or below the origin mark to change the direction of panning; to speed up panning, drag the pointer farther from the origin mark.

  • To automatically scroll up or down through a Word document, click the wheel button, and then move the pointer above or below the origin mark in the vertical scrollbar. To AutoScroll in an Excel worksheet, click the wheel button and move the pointer in any direction. To cancel AutoScroll, click any mouse button or press any key.

  • To change the zoom factor in any Word, PowerPoint, or Excel view that includes zoom capabilities, hold down the Ctrl key as you rotate the wheel.

  • Word and PowerPoint allow you to expand or collapse headings in Outline view (or in Word's Document Map). Point to any heading, and then hold down Shift as you rotate the wheel.
