Chapter 41. Creating and Customizing Tables > Changing a Table's Structure

Changing a Table's Structure

After you initially create a table, you can change its structure at any time, even if you've already added data to the table. From the Design or Datasheet view, you can add, delete, reorder, and rename fields. To change a field's data type, caption, and properties that validate data entries, however, you must switch to Design view. The techniques for working with fields vary slightly, depending on which view you're working with currently.

Managing Fields in Design View

To add a field in Design view, click in the first blank row at the end of the list and enter a new field name and data type; you can also add a description or adjust other field properties. To insert a new field within an existing list of fields, select a field, right-click, and choose Insert Rows. Access adds a blank row above the field you selected.
