Chapter 33. Administering Outlook > Managing Outlook Data Files

Managing Outlook Data Files

Whether you're managing your own Outlook configuration or those of an entire department full of users, the biggest challenge is keeping data files down to a manageable size. Over time, these files can balloon in size to hundreds of megabytes, especially if you routinely send and receive file attachments.

When your primary Outlook data store is a relatively small file, you reap a number of significant performance advantages. For example, searching for a specific item is much faster, and synchronizing data takes much less time. It's also easier to back up a small file, and anything that makes backups easier also makes it more likely that users will back up regularly.
