How to Install MSDE

When you choose File, New and click the Project (New Database) icon, Access asks you to fill in details about your SQL Server connection, but you can't connect successfully.

Find the Office 2000 CD1 and run the Sqlsetup program—you'll find it in the \SQL\X86\SETUP folder. This option is not installed by default, and it will not install automatically like other Office features. After installing the MSDE application, click the Start button and find the MSDE group on the Programs menu; run the Service Manager and start the MSSQLServer service. If you're creating a new project from scratch, enter your computer name as the name of the SQL server, but don't include any backslashes in front of it. Finally, if the MSDE service is running on a local machine, specify sa as the username and leave the password blank. After completing all those steps, you should be able to connect your Access project to the Microsoft Data Engine.
