Troubleshooting

Copying Visible Cells Only

Q1: I copied a filtered Excel list to an Access table and got the entire list rather than the filtered version. How can I copy just the filtered records?
A1: If you want just the filtered data, two methods are available:
  • Copy the filtered data to a separate section of the worksheet, and then copy that new section to Access.

  • Select and then paste only the visible cells. First create a blank Access table. Then go back to Excel and use Edit, Go To to open the Go To dialog box. Click the Special button, select Visible Cells Only in the Go To Special dialog box, and click OK. Then copy the selection and paste it into the blank Access table.

When Access Can't Create an Index

Q1: I was using the Import Spreadsheet Wizard, and Access says that it can't create an index.
A1: If you get this message, double-check that the data is actually unique in the column you specified for the primary key. Telling Access to build a unique index on a column that actually has a few sneaky duplicate values (which are probably data-entry errors) or extra blank rows is the most common problem when running this wizard.
