Performing OLAP Analysis on Database Data

You can use OLAP PivotTables and PivotCharts with data that doesn't come from an OLAP server (that is, data from a regular database such as Access or Oracle). You do this to get the organizational benefits an OLAP hierarchy gives you, or to handle larger data sets than an ordinary PivotTable can handle. If you're running out of memory, or if a regular PivotTable operates just too slowly because of all the calculations it's doing behind the scenes, this is the right option. For this technique, you use the OLAP Cube Wizard, which creates OLAP cubes (or databases) out of regular database data.

Starting the OLAP Cube Wizard

The procedure for the OLAP Cube Wizard is very similar to that for creating and running a normal database query. Choose Data, Get External Data, New Database Query, and create a new query or edit one that's already saved.
