Chapter 27. Retrieving Data from OLAP Se... > Using OLAP PivotTables and PivotChar...

Using OLAP PivotTables and PivotCharts

An empty OLAP PivotTable is just potential waiting to be explored. On the floating PivotTable toolbar, you'll see all the fields you can use in the PivotTable. Some fields (the dimension fields) will work only as page, row, or column fields, and the other fields (the measure fields) work only as data fields. Excel won't let you drag a field to the wrong spot; you'll get a dialog box telling you that the field can't be placed in that location.

You can see which fields are which by hovering the mouse pointer over a field in the PivotTable toolbar and waiting for a ScreenTip (page 383) (see Figure 27.7). The fields on the toolbar are broken up into separate rows. The icons to the left of the first field name indicate to what area on the PivotTable the fields in that toolbar row can be dragged.
