Retrieving the Data with an OLAP PivotTable or PivotChart

To actually retrieve data from an OLAP server, you need to create a PivotTable or PivotChart (you can't use Excel's normal query tools, the Query Wizard and Microsoft Query, to access OLAP data). Follow these steps:

  1. Choose Data, PivotTable and PivotChart Report to start the PivotTable and PivotChart Wizard (see Figure 27.4).

Figure 27.4. OLAP data access starts with the PivotTable and PivotChart Wizard. OLAP server data is defined as an external data source.

  2. Choose External Data Source.

  3. Specify whether you want to create a PivotTable or a PivotChart. You can easily convert one to the other later if you want. Then choose Next.

  4. In step 2 of the wizard, you tell Excel where your external data is coming from (see Figure 27.5). Click the Get Data button to open the Choose Data Source dialog box.

Figure 27.5. Click the Get Data button to specify the location of the external data for the report.

  5. This dialog box should be familiar by now (refer to Figure 27.1). Click the OLAP Cubes tab, and select the OLAP data source you created previously.

  6. Choose OK to return to the step 2 dialog box for the PivotTable and PivotChart Wizard, and then choose Next to advance to step 3.

  7. Step 3 asks where you'd like to put the final PivotTable or PivotChart (see Figure 27.6). Choose to place it in your current worksheet or in a new one the wizard will create for you. Then choose Finish to wrap up the process.

Figure 27.6. Choose whether you want your new OLAP PivotTable to go into its own worksheet or the one you're currently using. Click Finish to create the PivotTable.

What you'll see now is a blank PivotTable, waiting for you to fill in the table fields (dimensions) and table data (measures), as described in the next section.
