Chapter 29. Recording and Editing a Macr... > Create Your Own Commands with Macros

Create Your Own Commands with Macros

Have you ever wished that you could create your own commands in Excel? Perhaps you print the same report every month. To print that report, you must follow the same 10 steps. Wouldn't it be nice to click a button or press a keyboard shortcut and have the report print automatically? For operations like these, you can create a macro—a mini-program that performs a specific task—to repeat the steps perfectly each time. Macros are written in a programming language called Visual Basic for Applications or VBA.

Fortunately, you don't have to be a programmer to create a macro. Excel provides the Macro Recorder. The Macro Recorder works like an audio tape recorder. Rather than recording sound, however, the Macro Recorder records keystrokes and mouse actions. In this chapter, you'll learn how to create macros using the Macro Recorder. You'll also learn how to play and edit macros.
