Excel in Practice

Figures 19.29 and 19.30 show two ways to structure a yearly list with quarters. Both worksheets use good overall structures with consistent titles and no extra spaces, but Excel can use the worksheet in Figure 19.30 to create an Auto Outline. With the grouping in this worksheet, you can roll up the data by quarter and then by year, and you can view grand totals by row and column. The worksheet in Figure 19.29 also can be summarized by quarter and then total, with two levels of grouping applied, but Excel can't understand the worksheet's layout automatically.

Figure 19.29. You can group this worksheet manually, but Excel can't apply an Auto Outline because the quarter totals all appear at the bottom of the columns rather than after their respective months.
