Chapter 19. Outlining, Subtotaling, and ... > Creating Automatic Subtotals

Creating Automatic Subtotals

Excel provides automatic subtotaling capability for use with any suitably organized data. Lists often lend themselves to subtotals because the most common question asked after filtering a list is, "How do I total just the visible cells?" In a filtered (page 491) list, the Sub-totals command on the Data menu subtotals only the visible cells in the list. You can also use subtotaling for other calculations—using the functions COUNT, MAX, MIN, and so on.

Note

To subtotal a filtered list, begin by filtering the list, if desired. For any other kind of subtotaling, simply skip this step. The procedure is the same otherwise.
