Troubleshooting

Formatting Formulas As Text

Q1: I applied the text format to a cell that contains a formula. Why did other cells immediately display the #VALUE error?
A1: If you apply the Text format to a cell that contains a formula, Excel recognizes the cell's contents as text—not as a formula. So, if cell A1 contains a formula formatted as text, and cell A2 contains a formula that references cell A1, then cell A2 will display the #VALUE error.

The only way around this is to never apply the text format to cells that contain formulas.

Getting Elapsed Time

Q1: I'm trying to get elapsed time in minutes, but Excel says the custom format I've created is in error. I've typed [mm:ss]. What am I doing wrong?
A1: In all elapsed-time formats, you place the square brackets around only the firstcode. Change this format to [mm]:ss and it will work fine.
