Conditional Formatting

Most formatting is performed by you, selecting a cell or cells, and clicking the appropriate buttons or using a dialog box to execute your commands and customized options. You can, however, let Excel carry out your commands automatically by setting conditional formats.

Conditional formatting requires that you create a set of criteria, much like entering search criteria for a database. Using expressions such as "equal to" or "greater than" (expressed as = or >), you choose formats to apply to cells that contain text or numbers that match your criteria.
