Using Functions with Tables

One of the most difficult things for people in business to understand is how to measure data. Whether you're writing a book, creating widgets, dealing with creative factors, or managing finances, each element of the process can be measured. Being able to create a variance analysis is one of the most critical factors in gauging the success of your project or process. Knowing where you are at any given point enables you to both manage your business and peer over the horizon to see potential problems before they occur.

Figure 21.18 shows a simple table that explains the critical components in measuring variance. This particular table is an active variance table, which responds to something in process or occurring. A static or final variance table deals with final analysis—after the fact, when the project or process is complete.
