Access Control List

Lotus Notes has several features designed to limit access to documents, views, databases, and servers. For example, only authorized personnel can delete databases from the server, design applications, open certain documents, or read designated fields. The Notes administrator or the Application Designer controls most of this. What you are authorized to do depends on your status in the Access Control List of each database.

A database that contains all of your company's customers might be accessible to everyone in the company, but it's very possible that different people see different views, forms, and fields and can see only a partial list of customers. Perhaps each salesperson can see only the customers assigned to her when she opens the database, yet the sales manager sees all of the customers when he accesses the database.
